Over the years we've discovered our favorite campground/campsite and gone back to it time after time. Our hands down favorite campground is Sheridan Lake. This is a huge campground, there are 3 or 4 loops which comprise over 100 sites. We prefer the rocky loop for its on the water views and access plus it is just so serene. There is a great little peninsula and tons of inlets to explore. One year we brought our kayaks and found the most interesting little creatures around the lake. From turtles to ducklings to frogs to wild turkeys- I wonder what we'll see next time. There is a great little hike called the The Flume Trail near the campsite. It has nice views of the lake and is a fairly easy hike.
Besides visiting Mt. Rushmore for the millionth time, we just enjoy hanging around the campsite planning our next meal or gazing off to the lake. We like to kill time by walking to other loops exploring as we go. It makes me feel like a kid again, no responsibilities no agenda, just meandering. It feels more relaxing than any other vacation, you're not rushing around to visit things before you leave...we've already seen all that there is to see (Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Reptile Gardens...), we're just here for the views now. Maybe when Asher is older we'll reconsider the touristy stuff. But for now he won't remember a thing so we're going to take it easy and take lazy mid afternoon naps with the baby.
